Do I Need a Hair and Make Up Kit?

Yes you do! All actors, male and female, need to have a hair and make up kit.

MAKE UP
Wearing stage make up is a must. Under stage lights without make up your features may appear flat, dull and washed out. Stage make up enhances your skin tone and allows the audience to see you more clearly!

Overwhelmed? Don't be! If you've never put on make up before the BEN NY PERSONAL CRÈME KIT is a great starter stage make up kit. For only $20 it's an inexpensive investment and comes in a wide variety of skin tones. Make sure you have your kit ready for your production's hair and make up session. Schedule TBD.

What do I need to bring to FIRST DRESS REHEARSAL?

All actors need a basic hair and make up kit as well as appropriate undergarments for every dress rehearsal and performance. From the downtown theater scene to Broadway, all theater professionals should have the basics listed below:

Make Up
  • Basic stage-make up or good quality street make up. Please see the previous BC Dressing Room blog entry for more details.
  • Make up remover, wipes, moisturizer, tissues, Q-tips or any other face care product you use regularly. Hypoallergenic, fragrance free products usually provide the best results without irritation.

Hair Products
  • Brushes and combs
  • Bobbie pins and hair elastics that match your hair color
  • Styling products especially hair spray to keep your hair style intact through out the rehearsal or performance
  • In some cases it may be necessary to have a hair straightener, curling iron or hot rollers

Undergarments
The BC Costume Shop will always provide you with protective sweat layer garments like T-shirts, slips and socks. Additional garments you will need are listed below.
  • For both men and women, wear undergarments that are a neutral color or a color similar to your skin tone.
  • Women please remember to wear the bra you wore during your fitting. In most cases we will ask that you wear your most supportive bra. This must be available for every dress rehearsal and performance.
  • Men if you are wearing a tight fitting costume, please be sure to wear appropriate underwear. No boxer shorts under your tights.

If you have any questions at all please contact the BC Costume Shop. We’re happy to give you advice on any purchases you will need for dress rehearsals and performances!

What do I wear to an audition?

The Brooklyn College costume shop staff is asked this question quite often. "What should I wear to an audition?"  The general consensus seems to be to wear clothing that best represents the character without looking like a costume. Outfits should be stylish, neat, clean, flattering and not too flashy. Stay away from black and white especially for on-camera auditions. Good grooming is a must (unless the character is a bum) and fresh, light make up is essential for women. Of course, for every rule there seems to be an exception! What you wear to audition for a laundry detergent commercial might not be what you wear to audition for Quentin Tarantino! To help answer your questions further, I've complied information below from a casting director and two blogs written by fellow actors.
